1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet A
Coachwork by Sindelfingen
Chassis No. 154083
Engine No. 154083
Of all the streamlined masterpieces to emerge from 1930s Europe, few match the presence and pedigree of this 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet A. Ordered under commission number 236582 for a member of the illustrious Embiricos family, the car is one of just 32 examples of this elegant two-seater design built by the in-house Sindelfingen works. Its original owner is believed to be Nicholas Embiricos, a noted Bugatti and ERA racer of the 1930s and cousin of André Embiricos, whose name is forever tied to the legendary Bentley Aerodynamic Coupe.
Chassis 154083 was delivered new to the UK and changed hands a few times before 1944, when it was still described as being in "almost new" condition. The Cabriolet A body it wears is the ultimate evolution of the 540K style—with a super low roofline, recessed radiator, and a sleek, unadorned tail housing a single spare wheel. In its original configuration, it wore white paint over pigskin upholstery with a patent leather roof.
By the 1980s, the car had made its way to the United States and entered the renowned Blackhawk Collection, where Don Williams oversaw a sympathetic and exacting restoration. The result is the stunning jet black scheme seen today, accented by whitewall tires and subtle chrome detailing. The parchment interior was likewise restored and remains in remarkable condition, showing minimal use.
History and Significance
Beneath the elegant bodywork lies a 5.4-liter inline-eight engine with overhead valves and a Roots-type supercharger, producing 180 horsepower at full boost. Paired with a four-speed manual transmission and independent suspension, the 540K was a true grand tourer capable of 100 mph - a remarkable figure in the 1930s. Servo-assisted brakes and a quiet, comfortable ride completed the experience.
This example was acquired at auction in 2016 by Steve Plaster, the owner of Passport Transport and a noted collector of significant classic vehicles across a wide range of eras and marques. In 2023, Plaster sold the car privately to its current owner, Tom Maoli.
Today, chassis 154083 stands as one of the most visually striking and historically rich 540Ks in existence - a machine that blends engineering excellence with prewar artistry, and continues to captivate wherever it is shown
