1936 Packard 1407 Twelve Sport Dual Cowl Phaeton

Vehicle No. 921-205
Engine No. 904502
Few automobiles define American luxury of the 1930s like the Packard Twelve, and among them, none is more dramatic than the dual-cowl Sport Phaeton. Built in extremely limited numbers, just five were produced in 1936 on the mighty 144-inch-wheelbase Twelve chassis. This example, chassis 921-205, is believed to be the final dual-cowl phaeton ever built by Packard, delivered late in the model year by the Park Avenue dealership in New York.
From its earliest years, this Packard led a remarkable life. It was owned for decades by Don Di Michele of Ohio, a reclusive but influential collector whose Full Classics were rarely shown. It appeared in a 1967 Akron newspaper, already recognized for its originality and rust-free condition. Later refinished in a cream and black livery inspired by a period Fortune magazine advertisement, the car passed through the hands of major collectors including Dr. Donald Vesley, Rick Carroll, and Don Mayoras. Under Mayoras’ stewardship, it was a consistent concours award-winner wherever it appeared.
In 1995, the Packard was acquired by collector Ron Benach and underwent a meticulous restoration by Fran Roxas. It made a celebrated debut at the 1996 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where it earned a class award, and followed up with a perfect 100-point score at the 1998 CCCA Michigan Grand Classic. A rare repeat exhibitor at Pebble Beach in 2010 and 2019, the car also received a Palmetto Award at Hilton Head, further cementing its status as one of the finest restored Sport Phaetons in existence.
The car retains its original firewall vehicle number tag, both body tags, and stamped body framework, all confirming its authenticity as a factory-built Model 1407 dual-cowl Sport Phaeton. Powered by Packard’s silky-smooth 473 cubic inch V12 engine, it delivers effortless performance and timeless elegance. More recently, it received a comprehensive freshening by Harbor Auto Restoration and a new interior by Sharp Automotive Upholstery.
Now part of the prestigious collection of Tom Maoli, this Packard continues to embody the peak of American coachbuilt craftsmanship. With decades of known ownership, concours success, and documented originality, it remains a masterpiece of Classic Era motoring and a rare survivor from Packard’s golden age.
