1932 Duesenberg Model J 'Disappearing Top' Convertible Coupe by Murphy

Engine: j-284

Body: 2310

Originally delivered to Duesenberg’s Los Angeles branch in 1930, this remarkable vehicle remained unsold for two years before being transferred to the company’s New York office. In 1932, it found its first owner in J.W.Y. Martin, a prominent Maryland sportsman deeply involved in the state’s equestrian scene. Martin was known for breeding and raising horses, actively participating in polo matches, and hosting the prestigious Maryland Hunt Cup on his Baltimore County estate. His thoroughbreds achieved notable victories, including a three-time win at the Grand National point-to-point timber race and a triumph at the 1936 Baltimore Spring Handicap at Pimlico.

Over the years, the car passed through several owners before undergoing a significant restoration in 1962, during which it was finished in a striking red livery—a color it retained until 2012. In the early 1970s, the Duesenberg received another comprehensive restoration, during which it was fitted with a supercharger sourced from engine J-401 and gained its distinctive side pipes.

This example is particularly rare, as it is believed to be one of only 25 disappearing-top Duesenbergs ever built. It later spent 15 years as part of General William Lyon’s renowned car collection, further adding to its prestige.

In 2012, the car was acquired by collector Terry Adderly, who commissioned a full, four-year restoration by Brian Joseph’s respected Classic & Exotic Service. The car now wears an elegant off-white/cream finish, completing its transformation into one of the most distinguished examples of its kind.

Tom Maoli acquired this car in 2023 and has since proudly exhibited it at several prestigious events, including the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance, where it was awarded Best of Show in 2025
