1929 Hispano-Suiza H6B Cabriolet

Coachwork by Hibbard & Darrin

Chassis #: 12034

This exceptional Hispano-Suiza H6B is built on the marque’s renowned H6B platform, itself a refined evolution of the groundbreaking H6. From new, it was fitted with custom coachwork by Hibbard & Darrin — a design celebrated as one of the most elegant and sophisticated grand touring styles of the late 1920s. Remarkably, the car retains both its original chassis and engine, preserving its authenticity and historical significance.

Completed at the Hispano-Suiza factory on March 2, 1929, the chassis was then sent to Hibbard & Darrin for its bespoke bodywork. Later that year, the finished car was delivered to Clark de Pease, the official U.S. sales agent for Hispano-Suiza, where it began its life in the United States. The car spent the majority of its early years stateside before being placed in dry storage for approximately 30 years, as documented by Hispano-Suiza expert J. Heumann in the Hispano-Suiza Society Club Newsletter.

In the 1970s, the car was imported to England by distinguished historic car dealer Charles Howard and later appeared in a Coys of Kensington auction in the late 1970s. During the 1980s, the Hispano underwent a series of tasteful modifications to refresh its styling in line with 1930s design trends. Notably, the faux fixed roof was replaced with an elegant three-position convertible top, the windshield was slanted for a more aerodynamic and rakish profile, and the fenders were reshaped in the style of Fernandez et Darrin. Additional updates included transitioning the running boards to a separated, multi-piece layout, refining the door handles with an Art Deco aesthetic, and upgrading the dual spare wheels with proper wire wheels.

While being trailered to a new owner in Switzerland during the 1980s, the car was unfortunately involved in an accident, ending up in a ditch beneath the trailer. This incident led to a comprehensive body-off-frame restoration by the esteemed Walter Koeng Coachworks in Basel, Switzerland, a firm renowned for elite restoration quality. The restoration process spanned over two years and brought the car to award-winning standards.

Following its restoration, the Hispano-Suiza garnered numerous accolades, including Best of Show and First in Class at the European Concours d’Elegance in Düsseldorf, as well as First in Class at Preis des Landes Banen, Württemberg. It was also proudly exhibited at the prestigious Villa d’Este Concours. The car remained in a private Swiss collection until 2011, when it returned to the United States.

Back in the U.S., the car continued its celebrated career, participating in the Rolex Tour d’Elegance and appearing at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. In 2022, it claimed the Best Foreign Classic award at the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance.

In 2023, this distinguished automobile was acquired by collector Tom Maoli, becoming the latest jewel in his prestigious pre-war collection — a growing stable of world-class automobiles that reflect his passion for history, craftsmanship, and automotive artistry.
